Zefiro Methane Corp. Subsidiary Wins Ohio-Funded Environmental Remediation Contracts

Share:

Zefiro Methane Corp. has announced that its subsidiary, Plants & Goodwin (P&G), has been awarded eight projects by the state government of Ohio. These projects involve the plugging of 50 oil and gas wells located throughout Ohio to mitigate the risks associated with methane emissions. The wells, many of which are orphaned and abandoned, present a significant public health threat due to their potential to leak methane—a gas that is far more potent than carbon dioxide in terms of trapping heat in the atmosphere.

The effort is being led by Zefiro’s Senior Vice President of Business Development, Luke Plants. P&G crews have already plugged 20% of the wells as part of this initiative and are using four full-sized rigs deployed in various Ohio communities to address the remaining wells. The company’s environmental remediation specialists are working to ensure the safe sealing of these wells, which have the potential to leak significant amounts of methane into the environment. This is part of Zefiro’s broader strategy to take on the legacy issue of methane leakage, which has become a growing concern for both the public and private sectors.

Recent expert estimates indicate that millions of unplugged oil and gas wells are scattered across the U.S., with the potential to leak methane that could be up to 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide in its heat-trapping abilities. Ohio has approximately 19,000 orphan wells, with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) acknowledging that there are many more undiscovered sites throughout the state. To address this, the ODNR has access to funding of up to $634 million, aimed at plugging orphaned and abandoned wells through 2035, assuming consistent resource allocations from the federal and state governments.

Zefiro Methane Corp. is playing a crucial role in mitigating these risks through its specialized well-plugging services. CEO Dr. Talal Debs expressed pride in the company’s ongoing efforts, saying that their work from Oklahoma to the forests of Appalachia is helping to eliminate tens of thousands of tons of potentially toxic methane emissions. The company’s success in securing this Ohio project is part of its larger operational expansion, which includes opening a new operations facility in West Virginia and acquiring entities in Ohio and Pennsylvania to enhance its service capabilities. Zefiro is working with several key government partners, including the U.S. National Park Service, the State of New York, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the Province of Alberta, on major well remediation initiatives.

Zefiro’s operations in Ohio are a critical component of its increasing influence in North America, as the company continues to expand its footprint and help communities address the legacy issue of methane emissions. With growing demand for their methane abatement services, Zefiro is poised to make significant contributions to environmental remediation efforts across the continent.
