To mark Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) Day on November 18, the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) launched the new United Nations Geospatial website at www.un.org/geospatial. This launch aligns with the latest data strategy set by Secretary-General António Guterres, which emphasizes “Action by Everyone, Everywhere with Insight, Impact, and Integrity.” The goal of the UN Geospatial website is to improve decision-making and strengthen support for people and the planet by accurately identifying the locations of key events.
The UN Geospatial website provides valuable insights into the international, regional, and national contexts of geospatial activities and mandates carried out by the UN. Geospatial information, which includes location-based data and technologies, has become an increasingly integral part of our everyday lives, as evidenced by the growing use of geo-enabled applications and tools in mobile devices, computers, and phones. These technologies are used for various activities, from navigation to tracking weather patterns, and are key to driving action and decisions.
The UN has embraced the use of geospatial data to enhance the effectiveness of its mandates. The new website offers foundational knowledge about geospatial information, explaining its application and importance in supporting the UN’s goals. In addition, the website includes several key products from the former website, such as the current general map collection and maps showing the latest deployment of peacekeepers.
New features of the UN Geospatial website include:
- Web-mapping services available to all users
- A gallery showcasing examples of Earth observation
- Secretariat services
- Thematic products, work programmes, and partnerships
- A history of geospatial information within the United Nations
The website is expected to evolve over the coming months with the publication of its archives and additional thematic products. These updates will further support various UN offices by enhancing access to critical geospatial data.
In the coming months, the UN Geospatial website will continue to be enriched with more resources, expanding its role in supporting the UN’s work and facilitating greater access to location-based information. By leveraging geospatial information, the UN is poised to make more informed decisions and provide better support in critical areas that affect people and the planet.
