Assiniboine Community College is set to introduce a groundbreaking diploma program that melds traditional agricultural methods with cutting-edge digital technologies at its Brandon campus starting next fall.

Dubbed Digital Agriculture Technology, the program, housed within the Russ Edwards School of Agriculture and Environment, aims to equip students with the skills to harness digital integration for enhancing various facets of the agriculture industry.

Digital integration encompasses the utilization of technology in livestock and crop management, as well as the cultivation and supervision of food resources. Through hands-on learning opportunities, students will be able to apply their theoretical knowledge in practical, real-world settings, notes Tim Hore, the dean of the Edwards School.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of technology in modern agriculture, Hore emphasizes the program’s responsiveness to industry demands, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the evolving landscape of agriculture. The program emphasizes industry alignment, empowering students to leverage data for making informed decisions and optimizing agricultural processes.

Graduates of the Digital Agriculture Technology program will possess the skills to interpret and convey data effectively to industry stakeholders using interactive mapping and visual displays, adds Chris Budiwski, the academic chair of the Edwards School. Budiwski highlights the program’s innovative approach, which integrates traditional agricultural principles with digital data analytics, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of agronomy, crop production systems, livestock management, and digital agricultural technologies.

Scheduled to commence in September, the program includes a valuable work-integrated learning placement between the first and second years, offering students practical experience and industry exposure.

Assiniboine Community College’s Digital Agriculture Technology program represents a pioneering initiative poised to bridge the gap between conventional agricultural practices and emerging digital innovations, preparing students for success in the rapidly evolving agricultural sector.
